Our “Founding Fathers” are in shock!

A disturbing report that some Maine state agencies are refusing to cut their spending and balance the budget because it would violate federal mandates!

A quote from Representative Ralph Sarty’s article:

When it has come to the point where state agency Commissioners are telling their own Governor and Legislators – “ You can’t cut my budget beyond this point because of the restrictions and conditions imposed by the federal government”, we have a problem. State government can become very limited in its powers and ability to create a balanced budget without further taxing its own citizens. The very fact we as states have forfeited this kind of power to the Federal Government would make our “Founding Fathers” roll over in their graves.

I do wonder how much of this refusal is actually based upon a specific, hard-and-fast federal requirement, versus using some vague guideline as an excuse to avoid cutting the spending and try to force a tax increase?

I confess that I am too ready to take the easy way out, and to try to manipulate others for my agenda. The same could be true here. The Governor and the Legislature and the PEOPLE should refuse to take NO for an answer from those refusing to cut spending!
